The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a gaming console released by Sony in 2006. It arrived as the successor to the PlayStation 2 with improved graphics and powerful performance. It can be said that it was the first console to make games look more lifelike, with more detailed worlds, realistic lighting, and smooth character movements that were similar to movies. Games from this generation are surprisingly still popular to this day. These games seem to have aged like fine wine, still looking fresh and performing well.

1. Unchartered 3: Drake’s Deception

Developed by Naughty Dog, Unchartered 3: Drake’s Deception is a stunner with great visuals and cinematic gameplay. It is an action-adventure third-person shooter video game released in 2011 for the PlayStation 3. The game follows a treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his mentor Victor Sullivan who take players through detailed environments like ancient ruins and desert landscapes searching for a legendary lost city.

Parallely, they are also battling a secret society headed by Victor’s previous employer. The player controls Nathan Drake who can perform many actions like jump, sprint, swim, and climb. The game can also be played in multiplayer mode. The graphics are impressive with realistic lighting, sharp textures and smooth character animations. 

2. The Last Of Us

Once again developed by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is an action-adventure game released for PS3 in 2013. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, it follows the story of Joel and Ellie as they journey through dangerous environments filled with infected creatures and hostile survivors.

The gameplay includes stealth, exploration, and combat. Players have to use various weapons and resources to survive. The story focuses on the relationship between Joel and Ellie as they face challenges which makes it emotionally driven. The Last of Us has received praise for its strong narrative, character development, and immersive gameplay. 

3. Batman: Arkham City

Warner Bros. released the work, which was developed by Rocksteady Studios. Interactive Entertainment, Batman: Arkham City is an action-adventure game released for the PS3 in 2011. It has an open-world environment and continues the events of its predecessor, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Players are placed in a sprawling section of Gotham City turned into a massive prison for criminals and control Batman as he investigates the chaos within the city, and fights iconic villains like the Joker, Catwoman, and Two-face.

The gameplay is based on combat, stealth, and puzzle-solving. The game also includes side missions and collectible challenges which make players explore further. Batman: Arkham City remains one of the best superhero games of all time.

4. Heavy Rain 

Developed by Quantic Dream, Heavy Rain is an interactive drama and action-adventure video game for the PS3 with a focus on narrative and player choices. The game, which was released in 2010, centers on four characters who are involved in the mystery surrounding the Origami Killer, a serial killer who kidnaps children and drowns his victims with raindrops.

The gameplay is mostly making decisions and completing quick-time events that directly impact the story and lead to multiple endings based on the player’s choices. The player controls four characters from a third-person point-of-view and each choice affects character relationships and the storyline. 

5. Beyond: Two Souls

Developed by Quantic Dream, Beyond: Two Souls is an interactive drama and action-adventure game released for the PS3 in 2013. The story follows the life of Jodie Holmes, a young woman who possesses supernatural powers through her connection with an entity named Aiden. This connection gives her special abilities which players can control to interact with the environment, solve puzzles, and protect Jodie in dangerous situations.

At almost any time, the player can switch their control to Aiden also. Unlike commonly seen in other games, Beyond: Two Souls has a non-linear story timeline, and you see major moments from Jodie’s life out of sequence which helps to build suspense. 

6. God Of War III

Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, God of War III is an action-packed hack-and-slash game released for the PS3 in 2010. The game is set in ancient Greece and vaguely based on Greek mythology, a world filled with gods, titans, and monsters. It follows Kratos, the previous God of War, on his quest for revenge against the gods of Olympus, specifically Zeus, who is his father and had betrayed him.

The gameplay focuses on brutal, fast-paced combat where players can use mythological weapons. It has quick-time events where the player has to defeat legendary enemies like Poseidon and Hades during a timed sequence. If you enjoy Greek mythology and love some intense gameplay, you will appreciate this one. 

7. GTA V

Grand Theft Auto V, commonly known as GTA 5, is an open-world action-adventure video game released for the PS3 in 2013. Developed by Rockstar North, the game is set in the fictional city of Los Santos, which closely resembles Los Angeles. In the game, players explore a massive, highly detailed world filled with countless activities.

The game has three main characters – Michael, Franklin and Trevor, who have different backgrounds and skill sets and players can switch between them according to their situation. The gameplay includes missions, side activities, and open-world exploration and has both single-player and multiplayer modes. 

8. Tomb Raider

Developed by Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider is a third-person perspective action-adventure game released for PS3 in 2013. It is a reboot of the Tomb Raider series and tells the origin story of Lara Croft as she transforms from a young archaeologist into a skilled survivor. Players control Lara as she battles enemies, navigates dangerous landscapes and uncovers secrets of an ancient civilization. The gameplay includes exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving. 

9. Red Dead Redemption

Released for the PS3 in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is an open-world action-adventure game set in the American Wild West during the early 1900s. Players take on the role of John Marston who is a former outlaw forced by the government to track down members of his old gang to secure his family’s freedom. The game is played from a third-person point-of-view and the gameplay includes exploration, horseback riding, gunfights, and various side activities, like hunting, poker, and duels. 

10. Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch

Developed by Level-5, Ni no Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch is an anime role-playing game released for the PS3 in 2011. It is known for its beautiful anime-inspired art style created in collaboration with Studio Ghibli. The game follows a young boy called Oliver who goes into the magical world of Ni No Kuni to save his mother and face the evil White Witch. It is one of the most memorable RPGs on the PS3.
