As the first game in the series to be released on 9th generation gaming consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has captured the attention of the global gaming community. Set in 16th-century Japan, the game will have two protagonists who fight for peace and freedom for their people.
Ubisoft released an extended gameplay walkthrough 5 months ago, showcasing the cutting-edge graphics and immersive gameplay. With the exclusive latest updates regarding the final touch, Shadows has become the most anticipated game in the installment.
This article will be a comprehensive guide to Shadows, detailing the storyline, gameplay mechanics, inventory details, maps, and other updates so far. Also, we will get into the characters. Let’s start with the release date.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Release Date
The game is set to arrive on February 14, 2025. Ubisoft delayed the release from the previous date of 15th November 2024 mainly due to the weak performance of its latest release Star Wars Outlaws. The company is reported to be polishing every nook and corner of the game as it is their most ambitious project.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Storyline
Set in Japan’s late Sengoku period, the game is primarily an action-adventure that features clan wars, samurai battles, and the quest for peace. Since the story takes place in the late 16th century, we will see Portuguese traders and Jesuit missionaries within feudal Japan.
Various historical events and personalities will be included in the game, including Oda Nobunaga, a renowned daimyō (feudal lord), and his assault on the Iga province in 1581. So, we can assume that there will be chapters in the backdrop of Tenshō Iga War.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Detailed Gameplay Guide
The latest updates reveal that this will be the most technically sound game from Ubisoft, where minute details will be counted to enhance the gaming experience. Let’s get into gameplay details, including characters, maps, inventory items, and stealth philosophy.
Characters
Shadows will allow the gamers to play two distinct characters; Naoe, a Japanese shinobi (ninja), and Yasuke, a historical samurai. Both are different in behavior, skills, use of weaponry, and perspective on life. They are also attracted to different types of people romantically. Let’s get into the details.
- Naoe: Daughter of Iga’s renowned ninja Fujibayashi Nagato, Naoe is a 17-year-old warrior who uses her brilliance and skills to save her people from enemies. Naoe uses stealth, parkour, and gadgets, which will give the gamers an enhanced sense of gameplay.
- Yasuke: Inspired by a real-life historical figure, Yasuke is a combat-oriented and armored samurai who has an African origin. He was enslaved by the Portuguese and brought to Japan. This is the first time in the series a real-life personality is accommodated in the game.
Inventory
The inventory is a part of the character’s hideout, a place where gamers can improve their skills and customize their outfits. Hideout is like a settlement where you will have a crew to help you. Beyond the basic resources like regular rations, you will have an extended list of items, such as rare types of equipment and other upgrades. Details about the exact items in the inventory are not available at the moment.
Maps
As a game set in the final stage of the Sengoku period, the map will feature various places in central Japan, including regions such as Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, and the Iga province. It will give detailed data on the entire geography of the game, including viewpoints, landmarks, hideouts, valuables, and other collectibles.
Stealth Philosophy
The game is speculated to include a new mode “Observe”, where the characters can enter to collect detailed information from the events happening in front of them. The seethrough function, the classical eagle vision, will help the players extract data beyond the walls. Eagle vision will also help the players to isolate sounds. The new mechanics will remove the pet eagle function and give importance to the character’s enhanced senses.
Latest Updates: Speculations, Rumors, And Facts
Since the game has a dual-protagonist narrative, we can expect a multiplayer mode, where two players can engage in the same game together. Also, it is rumored that it will have online battle missions where several players can create teams and engage in clan battles.
One recurring complaint about the installment is the NPCs’ issues with believability and lack of purpose. The Shadows will put an end to this issue by creating AI-based NPCs with purpose, unique jobs, and daily routines. Players can interact with them in a unique way where they can build side narratives.
Coming to side-quests, the game will have hundreds of extra missions to complete, including individual challenges and clan battles. Beyond battles, intelligence and creativity-based activities will also be there. This expanded side mission will hook players into the game for a longer term.

Final Thoughts
The initial working title of the game was “Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red” which was planned as a successor to the previous game “Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe.” However, Ubisoft slightly changed its approach to gaming by making shifts in design and overall philosophy, which resulted in the Shadows. This is one of the primary reasons that promise us that the new game will be different from the previous ones in the installment. According to the producer Karl Onnée, the shift in gameplay mechanics and narrative needed newer consoles that could immerse the gamers in realistic light, shadows, and different weather conditions.
From February 14th we will begin receiving the initial reviews of the game, where we will get to know whether new additions like enhanced graphics, dual-protagonists, and the character of black samurai have worked or not. Let it be as worthy as the hype it creates. Beyond Shadows, Ubisoft’s next releases include Anno 117: Pax Romana and Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence.
