Although, in the beginning, the platform relied on Balancer-style pools, the creators are attempting to make a transition to a concentrated liquidity model, focusing on sustainability.
What is OSMO?
The native token of the Osmosis platform, OSMO is a governance token with a limited supply of 1 billion. The token gives the holders certain powers, letting them directly be a part of the governance of the platform.
Apart from providing liquidity and allowing staking, OSMO tokens hold voting powers in matters like protocol upgrades, selecting liquidity pools eligible for rewards, drafting incentivization strategy, and such, which decide the future of the platform.
At launch, the creators distributed 100 million OSMO tokens half of which were given away for free as airdrop as they put the other half in strategic reserve.
Like the halving of Bitcoin and Litecoin, OSMO has a “thirdening” schedule according to which the platform reduces the issuance of tokens three times a year.
As per this schedule, Osmosis released 300 million coins in the first year, which was reduced to 200 million in the next year, and 133 million in the third year.
Out of the newly released tokens, 25% of it goes to staking rewards while another 25 goes to developer vesting, 45% to liquidity mining incentives and the rest 5% goes back to the community pool.

As per the statistics, Osmosis has a market capitalization of $606,505,189.00 and a circulating supply of $658,716,246 OSMO tokens.
The token has seen its lowest value of $0.22 on 19 October 2023 and has gone up to an all-time high of $11.21 on 4 March 2022, within the 4 years from its inception.
Although this can’t be considered highly volatile compared to several other currencies with dramatic fluctuations, it still raises concerns about its future.
